breathing through my nose again

Some days smell better than others.

Today I treated my nose to some Neutrogena Rainbath shower and bath gel, an old favourite I'd almost forgotten.

And, the Ombra lavender extract foambath was on sale, so I came home with a bottle of that, too.

I'm sure it has been years since the last time I brought home a lilac scented deodorizer. Today I bought a couple for under the kitchen sink and the back of the linen closet.

But this was the first time I've even thought of buying a can of apple-scented Lysol -- the most impulsive of all the buys and yet an unregretted one. I've been out of the house half a dozen times since that first spray and each time I've returned to hear someone saying, "Ohhhhh, it smells so goooood in here!", that someone being me.

I'm usually a fan of scent-free environments. I know that fragrance isn't healthy or pleasurable for everyone, especially those who cannot protect themselves from its ill effects.

Some scents trigger a migraine for me, but I carry Benadryl tablets as an antidote for unpredictable encounters. Most lilies can make me vomit. Perfumes or cologne -- no matter how prudently applied -- are risky for me, too. One whiff might arouse me, turn me completely off or leave me wincing as I reach for my little green pill.

Scents marketed for men are less likely to upset my sensitivity. Introduce me to a woman wearing Poison, though, and I can guarantee you we won't be spending much drug-free time together.

I'd rather avoid what's toxic to me than medicate myself and stay, but I make exceptions for important meetings, forgetful friends and unanticipated or unavoidable situations -- that skunk in the backyard, for example, whose scent still lingers.

I find it a bit ironic that I was so easily able to tolerate such a persistent and less than pleasant odor -- at least until today when I tapped into my repressed need for some better smells.

I go through spells like this where I just crave atmospheric fragrance. Lately, I haven't been able to get enough of a simmering scented wax called Tennessee Kudzu. Real kudzu has very little fragrance, but these have me sighing whenever I open the door to my home.

i am a fragrance-free person, too, except for my own cologne - 212, my clean hair scented by l'oreal, my delicious smelling hubby when he is straight from his shower, and the scent of wisteria and asiatic lilies in the garden, fragrances i love mixing in the open air but cannot tolerate in closed spaces.

sounds like the skunk stimulated you to go on a fragrance shopping spree!

Fragrance free here too for the most part, but there is something delicious and absolutely irresistible about Ombra and Neutrogena Rainbath, and I can't give them up - will try that apple scented Lysol though.

I definitely lean toward the fragrance free end of things, though every now and then I find a scent that I want (but almost never get, because I know how short-lived the desire will be!).

but I absolutely adore Rainbath!

Ah lavender! A little scent sprayed on my pillow at night helps me to sleep. A bit sprayed on the laundry before it's ironed is heavenly. My sister grows it here in Oregon where I am visiting and I shall bring some home in my luggage.

Ah... I love certain scents, also. Have had to do without many however, because of our son's allergies.

Your post reminded me that that my Navy perfume is almost gone. I rarely wear it anymore, but whenever I do it always brings back memories. It represents an era in my life that has long past. *sigh*

Cynthia ~ One day I'd love to visit your area and fill up on some of the sights, sounds, and smells - I'm thinking some winter.

Sky ~ aahh, I remember the smell of a freshly showered hubby. Yum!

Cate ~ Yes, absolutely irresistible, not that I'd want to.

Jenn ~ Like you, I get a whiff now and then of a perfume I like, but I don't bring any home or put any on knowing that I'll be tired of it (or gagging from it) before I get it washed off.

Sharon ~ When fragance = allergic reaction, there really is only one wise choice, isn't there?

Pauline ~ Lucky you to be bringing home some of your sister's lavender. I spent the past three weeks tending a garden filled with lavender plants and I didn't think to snip a few branches to bring home. I do have a couple of small plants of my own though and hope next year to have them growing along one outside wall of my house.

Musing ~ Scents and memories, yes, so connected.
